Although COSPLAY has appeared many years ago in America, Japan and other countries, it showed up in China quite late. The first COSPLAY show was in Gaoxiong, Taiwan Province, on August 27, 1995. It is said that the performance was quite simple and characters which were played were only roles in video games. Later, several shows were carried out but the performances and roles were still simple and just a few people heard about them. The situation continued to February 1997, since then more and more people joined in and various COSPLAY shows were carried out, shaping a special look in local cultural activities.

However, it seemed that COSPLAY showed up earlier in Hong Kong as it was said that a group called Sibaichi dressed up to play characters in Legend of the Galactic Heroes in public in 1993. In the next year, the group gave the public the same performance and a new group named UVRZ was introduced by them. New COSPLAYERS wore traditional dresses of Japanese shrine maidens and blessed visitors. Different from Sibaichi, girls of UVRZ played specific roles in famous animations, comic and online games, such as Ranma 1/2 and My Love. Later more and more comic markets opened and they attracted more and more people, which having more and more influence in Hong Kong. As more and more young people was attracted, local comic association carried out a real display for fans of animations and comics during July 30 and August 3, 1998. It is said the COSPLAY performance was the hottest one ever since. Many famous characters in animations and video games were played and visitors were greatly shocked. At last, a girl who played the role of RG Veda won the first prize in the first COSPLAY competition. Later, more and more splendid COSPLAY performances were held and special zones were specially divided for visitors to take photos with their favorite roles. Then COSPLAY became popular in universities and many college students began to play roles of animations, making universities an active land for COSPLAY. Comparatively speaking, COSPLAY in mainland showed up quite late. Till 1998 some young people started to play roles of cartoons. Thanks to mature COSPLAY shows in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, C OSPLAY in mainland developed a lot. In 2008, the first COSPLAY show was performed with great success. Then more and more COSPLAY performances were carried out in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities, attracting more and more people, especially young people who are fond of Japanese animations and video games. Due to popular video games and fascinating COSPLAY shows abroad, more and more young Chinese join in and play their favorite roles. Many popular animations and online games become their themes, such as Chinese Paladin, Naruto, Death and The prince of tennis.
